Overview

The Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016 apply to any establishment generating non-hazardous solid waste, which covers the ordinary packaging, canteen, and general refuse every manufacturing unit produces alongside its process waste. A unit generating waste above the bulk-generator threshold set by the local authority has to register as a bulk generator, segregate waste at source into wet, dry, and other categories, and route it through authorized collectors or recyclers rather than municipal disposal. This runs separately from the Hazardous and Other Wastes Rules, which cover process-related hazardous waste and are handled under PCB Compliance.
